Two weeks ago, me and my husband had the opportunity to visit Greenwood Rising Black Wall St. History Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and it is an experience I will never forget. From the moment we walked through the doors, I was completely captivated. The visuals were absolutely incredible—every detail was thoughtfully and beautifully put together. The exhibits didn’t just tell a story; they brought history to life in a way that felt raw, personal, and deeply emotional. I definitely cried twice during the tour. As I stood there learning about the achievements, innovation, determination, and success that once filled the Greenwood District, I felt overwhelmed with pride and heartbreak all at once. To see the story of Black Wall Street told with such honesty and care was truly breathtaking. The strength and resilience of the people who built Greenwood despite unimaginable obstacles is something that will stay with me forever. One of the moments that touched me most was hearing Boley, Oklahoma mentioned several times throughout the museum. As someone whose family roots run deep in Boley, seeing my community recognized alongside other important pieces of Black history filled me with so much pride. It reminded me that the stories of our small towns matter, our ancestors matter, and the legacies they built deserve to be remembered and celebrated. Greenwood Rising does not shy away from the painful parts of history, but it also highlights the brilliance, excellence, perseverance, and hope that emerged despite tragedy. It is emotional, powerful, and necessary. At the very end of the tour, every visitor was asked a simple but profound question: “How will you take action toward racial reconciliation?” It’s a question that has stayed with me long after leaving the museum. A question that challenges us not only to remember history but to learn from it. A question that asks us to consider how we can help build understanding, healing, and unity in our communities today. I believe it’s a question all of us should be asking ourselves. If you ever have the opportunity to visit Greenwood Rising, take it. Go with an open heart, be prepared to learn, and allow yourself to feel every emotion that comes with it.
